Today, I’m reviewing one of the top hosting companies, HostGator.
They’ve been around since 2002 and provide shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting.
As I always do with my reviews, I present the positives, and then the negatives.
If you’ve used HostGator before and would like to share a review, please add it in the comments below.
Let’s first discuss what impressed me most about HostGator.
1. Great Pricing
As long as I’ve been using HostGator, they’ve always provided a tiered pricing structure. So you only pay for what you need and no more.
Their cheapest shared hosting plan starts at $3.96 a month and allows you to host one domain name.
If you want to host multiple domain names, the next up plan starts at $6.36 a month.
You can also get a VPS (virtual private server) for as cheap as $15.96 the first month, and $19.95 each additional month.
2. Top Notch Customer Service
HostGator’s support team is excellent.
Many other hosting companies I’ve dealt with either don’t have the technical knowledge to help me, or say they just can’t help.
HostGator though goes above and beyond and helps any way they can.
There’s only been a handful of times when they couldn’t help.
3. Upgrade As Your Website Grows
Because HostGator offers shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting, you can easily upgrade as your website grows.
For instance, you can start at the cheapest plan. Once you outgrow that, you can start at a cheap VPS. Then continue to upgrade your VPS as needed.
That way, you’re not spending anymore money than you need to.
And you can keep your account with one company.
Many other hosts only provide one type of hosting. So once you outgrow it, you need to go through the hassle of switching hosting companies.
4. Easy to Use VPS
Moving from shared hosting to a VPS can seem quite scary to the first timer.
I was scared when I first made the switch.
But HostGator has the best VPS for first time users.
It’s very easy to set up and navigate. And their support team is very helpful. They can answer any of your questions or make sure things are set up properly.
Many other hosting companies I used for VPS provided almost no help at all.
Like with any hosting company, there are some things I was not fond of.
1. Tricky Pricing
When you look at the pricing page, you’ll notice a small asterisk next to many of the prices.
This lets you know that the pricing you are seeing includes a 20% discount on the first invoice.
So if you sign up for a monthly contract, the first month is $7.16 a month. The second month’s invoice will be higher.
I’m not a huge fan of this. The first time I signed up, I was surprised at the increase in my second invoice.
2. More Complex WordPress Install
While the WordPress install isn’t difficult, HostGator’s install process is not as easy as other hosts.
It’s a minor point, but one that bothered me a bit.
HostGator is a very fine hosting company.
I highly recommend HostGator to both beginners and advanced users.
